The Direct Leadership Institute (DLI) has extended its quest of redefining leadership and management in the twenty first century to Rotarians in District 9125 Nigeria.

The training was part of activities lined up for the investiture of Barrister Jeremiah Haruna as President of the Rotary Club of Abuja, Gwarinpa.

The one-day seminar with the theme ?Leadership in the 21st Century — The Management Approach? was held at the Reiz Continental Abuja and featured about fifty (50) Rotarians from various clubs within District 9125.
The training was facilitated by a former Director General of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Prof. Olusegun Adewoye — a leader who has spent the greater part of his life mentoring and grooming leaders and managers.

As part of his presentation during the training, he urged Rotarians to ensure good leadership at all levels since it is one of the core areas of the club.

He said that the failure of leadership and management is one of the reasons Nigeria has not succeeded in joining the league of developed countries.

Adewoye identified former President Olusegun Obasanjo as one of the rare leaders on the African continent that made effective use of professionals to execute some of his polices.

Noting that a leader should be able to think and create change, he stressed that a leader should always be full of foresight.

He further said that managing human beings is one of the most difficult tasks on earth, but noted that a good leader should be able to carry everybody along in his/her leadership policies.

?Leadership emerges from those who try to manage? people, and only the people tried and tested in management roles eventually become leaders,?? he added.

He spoke on the need for leaders to be able to promote changes in their various organisations and always find ways to effectively communicate new ideas to their followers.? Adewoye said that a leader must have charisma and should be someone that people will believe in.

?Though everybody is a leader, it really depends on how you are able to manage situations around you,?? he said.

He added that leaders should know how to manage situations and separate facts from figures and optimise decisions to avoid deceit.? In his words:? ?A good leaders must always ask if the decision taken is able to move the organisation forward.?

He noted that the fortunes of the various organisations always depend on leaders.
Direct Leadership Institute is a registered corporate organisation administering both customised and correspondent international educational programmes to meet the human resources gap in Ghana and the West African sub-region.

In a message to the training, the President of Direct Leadership Institute, Dr. Donald Agumenu said:? ?Good leaders are not necessarily good managers, and good managers are not necessarily good leaders. Managers can be leaders at times, and leaders can be managers, although a leader does not have to be a manager to lead. Different leadership styles are effective in different situations or work environments.

Organisational success requires a combination of both effective leaders to inspire and effective managers to meet objectives.?

Meanwhile, the Rotary Club of Abuja Gwarinpa has conferred on Dr. Donald Agumenu its award for professional excellence.

The award was communicated to him in a letter by Barrister Banke Aderogba, the Secretary of the Rotary Club of Abuja Gwarinpa.

Dr. Agumenu, who is also the US-based Institute of Professional Managers Certified Managers Instructor for West Africa, was described as a rare gem on the African continent.

The letter from the Club read in part:? ?The Club has resolved to confer on you its prestigious Professional Service Award. This is in recognition of your exemplary contributions to the Advancement of Leadership and Management Skills in Africa, and to also serve as encouragement for you to do more.?

We are also pleased to inform you that the investiture committee has recommended you for induction as a Honorary Member of Rotary.?
