DAMASCUS — The Syrian army said Saturday that the number of terrorists fleeing toward the Turkish borders have increased significantly as a result of their “successes” against the rebel groups, according to the state news agency SANA.

Backed by local defense forces and Syrian and Russian air forces, the army has carried out successful battles against terrorist groups in several Syrian provinces, namely the countryside of the capital Damascus, southern provinces of Daraa and Swaida, central provinces of Homs and Hama as well as the northern provinces of Latakia and Aleppo, a statement said. ISTANBUL — A Kurdish militant group has claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen airport which killed one person, Turkish media reported on Saturday.

“Kurdistan Freedom Hawks (TAK), known as a sympathizer of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), carried out the mortar attack at Sabiha Gokcen airport leaving one aircraft cleaner dead and injured another one,” Turkish media quoted a TAK statement published by Kurdish Firat News Agency. RAMALLAH/JERUSALEM — Two Palestinians were shot and killed after attempting to attack Israeli security forces in northern West Bank and east Jerusalem on Saturday, Palestinian medical officials said.

Maher al-Jabbi, 56, tried to run a car over Israeli soldiers at an army barrier south of the northern West Bank city of Nablus. The soldiers opened fire and critically wounded him, who died shortly after, according to Palestinian Health Ministry and Israeli radio. One of the soldiers was lightly injured.
