Health officials have started a vigorous campaign to sensitize people on the need to vaccinate against Cerebro Spinal Meningitis (CSM) in the Upper West Region.?

The campaign is ahead of a mass vaccination exercise scheduled to take place from October 2 to 12 this year.?

The Upper West Region has recorded a total number of 150 cases of CSM in the first quarter of 2012 with 17 affected persons losing their lives.

The Deputy Upper West Regional Director of Public Health, Dr. Kofi Issah bemoaned the refusal of the residents to adhere to certain precautionary measures to avoid being affected by the disease.?This he said exposes them to this annual epidemic.?

Mahama Latif reported that ?the influx of affected immigrants from neighboring countries into the region has over the years posed a major challenge in the fight against the disease in the region.?

He added that the Regional Health Directorate has hence deployed a team of 370 health personnel ?to carry out a mass vaccination exercise in the region between the 2nd and 12th of October this year.?
