Under the CREMA , the Wildlife Division of the Forest Commission with sponsorship package from the World Bank and the Business Advocacy Sector Fund(BUSAC) formed the Sanyiga, Kassena Gavara Kara CREMA Executive Committee and built the capacity of the group to manage the natural Resources and Wildlife in the Western Wildlife Corridor of the area,

The Sanyiga, Kassena Gavara Kara CREMA lies about 50km west of the Paga in the Kassena-Nankana West District and covers an area of about 660sq km of the hilly matured Guinea Savannah Vegetation type that has been protected by the nine communities that formed the CREMA. The Kara CREMA, one of the formed CREMA’s formed part of a larger corridor that link Nazinga Game Reserve in the Bukina Faso to the National Mole Park in Ghana. It therefore holds rich biodiversity that forms the basis of the socio-cultural and economic prospects of the local communities.

She stated that since the establishment of the CREMAs in some communities in Ghana , it had not only led to the reduction of bush fires and the return of wild animals such as elephants and antelopes.

“For example the Sitatunga –a marsh unregulated that was believed to have gone extinct in Avu Lagoon area in the Volta Region for about 50 years has resurfaced and multiplying. Also Elephants that stopped visiting the Zukpiri area in the Upper West Region have started visiting as other wild animals are also visibly resident in Sanyiga, Kassena Gavara Kara CREMA”, she stated .

She expressed happiness about the boldness of the Murugu Mognori constituents who stood on their grounds and stopped illegal harvesting of tress within the CREMA and also fought off some neigbouring residents from poaching within the landscape and entreated the newly formed CREMA Committee to follow suit.

Whilst given the assurance that her outfit would give a helping hand to the committee to execute members to execute their task she called on the Kassena-Nankana West District and the Sissala East District Assemblies to give the CREMA priority in their Medium Term Development plan and also gazette the bylaws on the CREMA as well as support the CREMA executive to work effectively.

Dr Andrew Kyei Agyare , the Head of Collaborating Unit of Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission attributed the decline of Wildlife to overreliance of state restrict and control , bushfires and shifting cultivation and expressed the hope that with the establishment of the CREMA Committees and providing them with capacity building to protect and preserve the natural resources the menace would reduce to its barest minimum.

In another development, the Wildlife Division in collaboration the BUSAC Fund organized two separate workshops to sensitize nineteen communities in the Mamprugu/Moagduri District in Northern Region and Builsa South district in the Upper East Region on the CREMA constitution.
