Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has waded into the debate over the creation of some 45 new constituencies which has been a bone of contention between the Electoral Commission (EC) and some individuals, political parties including the NPP, describing it as ?not sensible.?

Former President Kufuor was addressing NPP party faithfuls at the party’s campaign launch for the 2012 elections at the Mantse Agbona park at James Town in Accra.

According to the former president, ?there is nothing in the constitution that enjoins the Electoral Commission to create a constituency just because the Ministry of Local Government has decided to create a district?, adding that??So I don?t think the Commission is bound by law to do this, it is not sensible, it may lead to trouble so we want to appeal to the Electoral Commission not to do it.?

He expressed hope that there will be a peaceful election in December, but stressed that the position taken by the EC could create trouble for the nation, saying that?Ghana has just two months to the general elections and the voters register is ready hence there is no need for the Electoral Commission to insist on creating the new constituencies.
