The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has entered a contentious phase as it prepares for the upcoming 2024 general elections, with its Director of Communications, Sylvester Sarpong Saprano, declaring the party’s independent committee unconstitutional and illegal.
Saprano criticized the committee’s recent actions, including plans to conduct a constituency audit, organize a congress, and facilitate presidential primaries without authorization from the party’s central committee. He emphasized that all party organs, except the chairman and leader, have expired, leaving no legitimate framework for the independent committee.
In an interview with Citi News, Saprano asserted, “The so-called independent committee is unconstitutional and illegal. They don’t have any constitutional foundation, and they lack capacity.”
The controversy stems from the independent committee’s initiative to engage regional executives and media in preparations for the upcoming elections. Saprano urged the committee to seek approval from the central committee before proceeding further with its plans.
He highlighted the absence of functioning polling stations, constituency, and electoral area executives within the CPP, underscoring the need for adherence to constitutional protocols in the party’s organizational structure.
As the CPP navigates internal disputes over its leadership and operational procedures, the legality and role of the independent committee remain subjects of contention, potentially impacting the party’s readiness for the electoral challenges ahead.
