Kade, Feb 22, GNA – Kofi Birikorang, a 21-year-old driver, who stole his master’s taxi cab and sold it as scrap, was on Wednesday sentenced to 12 months in prison by the Kade District Magistrate’s Court.

In addition, the court presided over by Mr Abdul Majid Illiasu, ordered that the convict should pay his master GH¢300 compensation for the inconvenience.

Birikorang pleaded guilty.

Police Inspector D.T Nartey said Seth Aheng, the owner of the taxi, employed Birikorang to drive the taxi in Accra.

He said about a month ago, Birikorang sent the car to his hometown, Apinamang in the Kwaebibirem District to work without the owner’s consent.

After fruitless efforts to trace the car, Mr Aheng had information that Birikorang was using the vehicle at Apinamang.

Mr Aheng sent a warning to Birikorang to surrender the vehicle without delay but he refused to comply with the directive and sold it as a scrap to a scrap dealer for GH¢300.

On January 10, an auto-mechanic, on sighting the car, told the purchaser that the vehicle could not be deemed by any rational being as a scrap as it looked new.

The witness, subsequently, warned the scrap dealer to trace the driver and cause his arrest as the car might not be the driver’s property. Birikorang was arrested and sent to the Police where he admitted the offence.
