A major civil construction contractor in Mozambique, the Britalar company, is under corruption investigation, the Maputo daily Noticias reported on Monday.

MozambiqueThe Portuguese company recently went under media focus for its involvement in a work accident in downtown Maputo, killing 5 construction workers and injuring 8 others.

The investigation is in regard to the public tender awarded to the company for the rehabilitation of the Julius Nyerere Avenue, which runs through Maputo’s noble areas.

Bernardo Duce, spokesperson of the Central Bureau for the Fight against Corruption, said that the investigations are quite advanced and the conclusions should be known and disseminated soon.

The major problems were the repeated failures in delivering the work on schedule, together with asphalt breakdown and other quality issues.

Concerned with the situation, the authorities collected samples of the asphalt to 3 different labs, two in Maputo and one in Portugal, all results ended up concluding that the material was of inferior quality. Enditem
