Mr. Portuphy only tendered in his resignation letter on Wednesday to the President.

His continuous stay in office had been criticized while he still occupied a key political office in the National Democratic Congress after he emerged winner in a keenly contested election.

The main opposition New Patriotic Party in particular questioned his stay in office raising doubts about fairness in his duties in that office considering his deep political affiliation and position.

Anti corruption group, the Ghana Integrity Initiative, also waded into the public discourse and demand parliament to force Mr. Portuphy out of office.

His Deputy, Anita De-Soso also resigned from her position a few months after being elected Vice Chairperson of the NDC.

Mr. Portuphy was the first National Coordinator of NADMO but was asked to proceed on leave when the NPP took over power in 2001.

He however returned to NADMO in January 2009 after the NDC was voted back into power.
