Mubarak Amarh, a civil engineering graduate who boxes out of Seconds Out Gym, has set his sights on the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after securing the light heavyweight gold medal at the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) National Individual Amateur Boxing Championship on February 27 at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.

Amarh delivered on his pre-fight promise, defeating Abdul Wahab of Sonia Gym in the 81-kilogram final in emphatic fashion, sending Wahab to the canvas three times in a single round before the referee stepped in to halt the contest on safety grounds.

The stoppage drew praise from Ghana Boxing Federation Vice President Nii Gonti Adjor I, also known as Nii Adama Addy, who said the federation ensured all safety protocols were observed throughout the championship. “Safety comes first in amateur boxing,” he said.

Coach Danny Aryee Quaye, who trains Amarh alongside fellow coach Kucheku at Seconds Out Gym, said the team prepared thoroughly for the final. He confirmed that Amarh’s gold medal positions him as a strong candidate for the Black Bombers national team ahead of major international assignments. The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, scheduled from July 23 to August 2, represent the immediate competitive target for Ghana’s national selectors.

Amarh himself is clear about his ambitions. “My dream is the Olympic Games, but the Commonwealth Games will serve as preparation ground to gain international games experience,” he said.

The Osu-born boxer graduated from Accra Technical University with a degree in civil engineering and trains at the Seconds Out Gym, where he was first discovered by coaches while jogging on the beach. His family initially resisted his pursuit of boxing, but their support has since grown with his progress. Those around him have taken to calling him “The Professor,” a nod to his academic background and composed ring style.

Twellium Ghana Ltd, producers of Verna Water and Rush Energy Drink, presented gift vouchers to outstanding boxers at the event.
