“I can say for a fact that we, at least the church founded institutions, are not in it for the money, we are hardly breaking even, we need all the assistance …to turn out the best quality human resource for development.”

Dr Cyril Fayorsey, President of the Evangelical Presbyterian University College (EPUC), Ho made the appeal at the ninth matriculation of the University in Ho.

A major relief that government could extend to such private universities would be to exempt them from paying taxes, he argued.

“We do not make or declare profits…as companies limited by Guarantee.” “But for the support of the Churches, we would not be able to expand infrastructure,” Dr Fayorsey said.

He said government “must of necessity extend the Getfund to private tertiary institutions for the provision of infrastructure, laboratories and research grants” as a gesture of appreciation for helping to expand the frontiers of tertiary education in the country.

Dr Fayorsey also lamented the unfair competition private universities have to contend with from their mentoring Universities.

He said while the mentee institutions were subjected to rigorous processes to be able to establish campuses, their mentors who award the same degrees were given free rein to establish campuses “in our backyard.”

“That is certainly unfair competition,” he said.
