Mahamudu_BawumiaThe Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako is convinced the choice of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, is one which is mostly informed by compatibility, consistency and the tradition of the party rather than political popularity – to which the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) finds advantageous.
Explaining this, he argued there is some sense in the widely held notion by the NDC that Dr Bawumia’s demonstrated inability to rally support for the NPP will hurt the party. But dismisses the other notion that the Nana Addo-Bawumia combination will play to an increase in the NDC’s chances to retain power after the December election.
“This ticket went into the 2008 election; this ticket won the first round, lost the second round marginally. The party has conducted its own research and have come to the conclusion that their defeat was not due to Bawumia as such. If anything, it’s the number one [Nana Akufo-Addo] who should take responsibility for the defeat.”
Having been faced with the results of the research, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako said the party has subsequently made various adjustments to make sure that at least those same issues will not arise to obstruct the party’s chances of regaining power come December and those issues do not include the Nana Addo-Bawumia pair.
He mentioned the expansion of the party’s electoral college as one such initiative which increased the sense of ownership among party supporters. The early flagbearership voting process which was soon followed by a nationwide campaign was another such initiative; here to better sell the presidential candidate. Another being, the unanimity among the Council of Elders in selecting Nana Addo’s running mate.
“…I want to also thank very much our National Executive Council and the National Council for overwhelmingly and unanimously endorsing my nomination. I owe them so much gratitude. I know that this is a sacred responsibility that has been entrusted upon me and I accept the challenge with all humility and I hope to be able to rise up to that challenge with the blessings of Allah”, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia said soon after his partnership with Nana Akufo-Addo was made official.
He added: “I know that this nomination is one that people have talked about a lot but I will like to say that this nomination is not about me personally. It is about the future of this country; it is about the youth of this country; it is about how we are going to transform this country. So my nomination would be meaningless unless it is linked to the total economic transformation of Ghana”.
According to Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, though it will be profitable for a vice presidential candidate to rally support for a ticket, much of that responsibility rather lies with the presidential candidate.
“You will not be scientific to presume that the vice brings nothing at all …So you will expect that when you are nominating the vice, that before you win the election, this is what he brings. ”
