The Beijing Xidan Spice Spirit Catering Company is targeting 6,000 kilograms of crayfish on daily basis before processing it for export.

Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua said on Wednesday the Chinese company planned to invest 9 million U.S. dollars towards a crayfish processing plant.

Mbugua welcomed the venture noting that it would offer revenue to the county and job opportunities to the fishermen and local youths.

Naivasha sub-county fisheries officer Mathew Ngila said that harvesting of crayfish by the Chinese investors had kicked off.

He welcomed the move by the investors to donate the fishing traps noting that this was the first time the fishermen had received such kind of working tools.

“Currently the fishing of crayfish is on small-scale and we hope that the catch will rise after the investors donated the fish traps to the fishermen,” he said.

Ngila admitted that the lake had high potential of crayfish, adding that for years the species had been largely ignored. Enditem
