The entrepreneurs, including Chairman of Kenya Chinese Chamber of Commerce Zhuo Wu, donated an assortment of foodstuffs to locals. This was on top of their previous donations which included bedding materials.

The founder of the Sino-Africa Firefly Charity and organizer of the series of donations, Professor Wang Lei said this is a new model of charity to the Kibera slum.

The organizer normally invites donors to directly visit slums and to donate directly by themselves which allows philanthropists to experience local people’s life.

Wang, who also is the Deputy Head of the Expert group on the Qifei Project, which is a collaborative project between China’s Ministry of Science and Technology and Kenya’s ministry of health, said that the donations were motivated by the desire to help the less fortunate members of Kenya’s society to meet their daily needs.

Wang said that currently the government-to-government relation between Kenya and China is very cordial. “Our aim is to also elevate the people to people relationship between the citizens of China and Kenya,” he said during the visit to Kibera.

One of the beneficiaries of the Chinese support was Pinto Genga, who has lived in Kibera for the past 16 years. The 41-year-old father of three children is currently unemployed due to prolonged sickness.

“I used to work as a security guard until six months ago when I was infected with tuberculosis,” Genga told Xinhua in Nairobi.

Currently the sole bread winner in his household is his wife who is a food vendor in the sprawling Kibera slums.

Genga said he is very grateful for the Chinese food donation as it will help to supplement his family’s meager earnings.

He noted that the donation comes at an ideal time when the current drought has increased the cost of basic food necessities in the country. Enditem
