Chinese enterprises and other private entities are supplementing the Zambian government’s efforts in uplifting education standards in schools through corporate social responsibility, a civic leader said on Tuesday.

Rashid Mulenga, Mayor of Kalulushi town on the Copperbelt Province, said this following an announcement by a Chinese enterprise Sino Metals Leach (Zambia) Limited that it will spend over 66,000 U.S. dollars in the construction of a one-by-three classroom block.

The Chinese firm will also construct an ablution block at Chishilano Primary School in Mwambashi community of Chambishi Township in the Copperbelt Province.

Speaking recently during a ground breaking ceremony of the construction works, Mulenga said the mining firm had recently relocated the community and pledged to work on some of the urgent developments the community lacked.

She said the community had been facing challenges in the education sector and health due to the increase in population hence the urgent need for such infrastructure in the area.

“We would like to thank Sino Metals for now fulfilling its pledges it made to the people of Mwambashi community after it recently relocated them when they acquired land for operations, this is a good social responsibility move,” she said.

The civic leader said lack of adequate classrooms and a clinic in the area had forced the community to walk long distances to access the facilities.

Mulenga said the mining firm would also construct a clinic for the community so as to take health care services closer to the people.

Sino Metals Chief Executive Officer Zhang Peiwen said the project was part of his firm’s social responsibility program.

He said the mine has contracted Demos Company Limited to undertake the project and urged them to carry out quality works.

Demos Company Limited Project Manager Evans Mulungwe said the project would be completed in four months and pledged to do good works. Enditem
