Chinese search engine company Inc. (BIDU.NASDAQ) led a group of investors to invest over 100 million yuan in Chinese public transportation WiFi company 16 WiFi, reported Xinhua-run Friday.

China’s three IT giants – Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent – all showed their presence in commercial WiFi field, according to Last year, Alibaba and Tencent both invested in WiFi start-ups.

The move is considered a strategic landmark for the commercial WiFi service market. As said Qiu Chaomin, chairman of 16 WiFi, WiFi service on buses would enjoy a boost thanks to the company’s large market share, wide regional presence and partnerships in more than 60 cities nationwide.

16 WiFi is a pioneer in developing WiFi services on buses and subways. It launched its Bus WiFi service in 2011 and has installed more than 30,000 WiFi hotspots and signed agreements to provide WiFi service in about 150,000 buses across the country.

United Electronics (002642.SZ), which also participated in the A-round financing of 16 WiFi, will gain from the investment together with leading WiFi equipment producers such as BOCO Inter-Telecom and Sunwave Communications Co., Ltd.
