President John Dramani Mahama has announced China’s grant financing for a contemporary market in Aflao during the Phase Two launch of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project.

The July 2025 revelation positions the market as an economic revitalization tool for the border community, complementing ongoing coastal resilience efforts in Ketu South Municipality.

Official project details confirm the Chinese-funded market will replace outdated trading infrastructure in the Volta Region’s border zone. Mahama framed the initiative as dual-purpose: “The people of Aflao deserve a safe, modern trading environment while we address tidal wave impacts,” he stated at the ceremony, highlighting synergies between the market development and the 2.5km sea defense system designed to protect 8,000 coastal residents.

The President emphasized Ghana-China cooperation, though specific grant amounts and construction timelines remain undisclosed. Municipal authorities confirm the market will feature upgraded sanitation systems, dedicated spaces for cross-border traders, and security infrastructure addressing longstanding complaints about the current facility’s conditions.
