However, as the game wore on Chelsea gathered confidence and took the game to Maccabi third half. Gary Cahill gave the visitors the lead in the 20th minute from William’s corner kick.

The Blues were blessed with a one man numerical advantage before the half when former Chelsea defender Tal Ben Haim was sent off for a nasty tackle on Diego Costa.

Chelsea’s win, and Porto’s loss to Dynamo Kiev, tied the first two teams on 10 points, two more than Kiev.

Back from the recess, Chelsea’s man of the moment and undoubtedly the best free kick taker in Europe, Willian scored one of his trademark kicks from 22 yards which goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic had no answer to.

Chelsea scored two more goals through Oscar and substitute Kurt Zouma to end the scores at 4-0.

With Chelsea and Dynamo Kiev both winning on Tuesday, the Blues have leapfrogged to the summit of the Group G table on 10 points same as FC Porto who were beaten by Dynamo.

This means that Chelsea must beat Porto in their final group game next month in other to gain qualification to the 1/16th stage.
