In a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency, its Executive Director Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng, who is also the Ambassador Extraordinaire of Ghana Prisons, expressed the organisation’s hope that the tenure of President Akufo-Addo would witness a massive transformation of the Prisons Service.

It said the Service have over the years suffered from infrastructural neglect and other facilities that could transform the Service as a purely correctional institution to enable it deliver on its mandate.

The statement also cited massive congestion across the country’s Prisons, lack of proper classification of prisoners, wrongful incarceration of innocent people because of shoddy police investigations, lack of access to legal counsel by prisoners to facilitate appeal processes among others as some of the problems it believes have dented the human rights record of the country.

It said as a signatory to many international treaties and conventions on human rights, CCF finds it appalling that such infractions of the law in the country’s Prisons continue to gain roots in Ghana’s Prisons.

The Foundation expressed the hope that as an astute lawyer with a tall record of fighting human rights violations in the country, President-elect Akuffo Addo would seek to address these infractions.

It also urged the incoming administration to make the welfare of Prison officers a priority, especially the provision of better housing facilities to enable them discharge their duties professionally.

The Foundation said it was following with keen interest, the NPP’s manifesto promise to build two Prison hospitals in Southern and Northern Sectors and hopes it delivers on its.

It also hopes the Efiase Project initiated by the Prison Service Council receives the needed support to enable it achieve its ten-year strategic plan of transforming the Prisons.
