Most Reverend Charles Palmer-Buckle swearing in the anniversary planning committee members

THE CATHOLIC Church in the Archdiocese of Accra has launched its 120th anniversary of catholic evangelism in Accra.

The official opening of the year long celebration themed, ?120 years of Catholic mission: honoring the past, celebrating the present, building the future,? is to review the successes and failures of the church in evangelism over the past 120 years.

Most Reverend Charles Palmer-Buckle, who officially opened the celebrations, said anniversary activities will start from the first Sunday of Advent on December 2, 2012 through to the Feast of Christ the King on Sunday November 24, 2013.

?A few of the events that will involve the entire archdiocese are the Archdiocese Opening Ceremony, Parish Opening of the 120th Anniversary Celebration, Commemoration of 120th Anniversary of the Feast of Holy Mass, the Commemoration of the Consecration of Sacred Heart Church at Derby Avenue and the climax of the 120th celebration, the Feast of Christ the King,? he said.

Speaking on the theme and programmes of the celebration which has the slogan, ?Arise Catholic Faith Rejoice and Renew,? Most Reverend Palmer-Buckle, said the archdiocese will undertake a critical examination of past efforts in order to forge better evangelism strategies for future challenges which includes a five-year development programme for the Accra Archdiocese.

He also called on the Archdiocese to focus its activities on the three indispensable parameters and goals of evangelism.

?The celebration should deepen the spiritual growth and development of Catholics; the knowledge and intellectual appreciation of the catholic faith and doctrines; the spirit of fellowship and communion among the church members, church societies, parishes and in the archdiocese as well as with the universal church,? he said.

The metropolitan archbishop of Accra also launched a logo competition open to youth of the church below the age of 25.

He said the Lord had endowed the Archdiocese with many creative and intelligent youth in the church.

Therefore, ?we hope to still invest very much in them if indeed they are to be the future of our church and her rich source of a vibrant and dynamic and innovative leadership, for priests, religious and lay people in the Archdiocese of Accra in the future,? he said.

He said the winning logo will be used for the banners, anniversary cloth, t-shirt and souvenirs for the anniversary celebration.
