Cameroon’s upcoming presidential election has drawn unprecedented interest, with Elections Cameroon (Elecam) confirming more than 80 candidacy applications ahead of the October 12 vote.

The electoral body released a preliminary list featuring political heavyweights and newcomers alike, signaling a potentially transformative contest in the Central African nation.

The applicant pool includes incumbent President Paul Biya, who has governed since 1982, alongside prominent opposition figures Maurice Kamto of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement and Joshua Osih of the Social Democratic Front. Seven female candidates and 26 independents joined the race, while former ministers Issa Tchiroma Bakary and Bello Bouba Maigari – both Biya allies – also submitted applications.

Elecam will now scrutinize documentation before publishing the final candidate list 60 days prior to election day, as mandated by electoral law. The surge in applicants marks a significant increase from previous elections, with 2018’s vote featuring just nine candidates. Political analysts suggest the crowded field reflects both growing opposition mobilization and potential fragmentation of the anti-Biya vote.

The October election occurs amid ongoing security challenges in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions and economic pressures from global commodity shocks. Observers will closely monitor whether the electoral process addresses longstanding concerns about transparency and inclusion raised by opposition groups during previous polls.
