A captain in Cameroon’s army was killed early Sunday by armed separatists in Southwest, one of the two English-speaking regions of the country, Cameroon army said Sunday.

“Captain Djonwe Wayang was killed in an ambush in the Southwest,” a brief statement by the army said, without giving details.

The victim was a 35-year-old captain from the 2015 promotion of the Combined Services Military Academy of Cameroon. He was on duty in Limbe, a coastal city, before being detached to Buea. He was to be relieved before the end of this month to join his new post at Limbe, according to Emmanuel Godwe, cousin of the deceased.

Last year, a report by the military said that more than 100 soldiers had been killed in the troubled regions since an armed conflict between government forces and armed separatists started in November 2017.

The number of separatists killed is unknown.

Separatists want to secede from the largely French-speaking Cameroon and create a new nation they call “Ambazonia” in the two English-speaking regions of the Northwest and Southwest. Enditem
