An angry policeman on duty at the Derby Avenue branch of Cal Bank in Accra last Saturday morning opened fire in the banking hall, injuring two persons.

The Corporal?s attempt at shooting a certain Nathanial Nortey, a customer of the bank with whom he had a disagreement, missed his target, hitting others rather.

Giving an account of what occurred at the Bank that fateful day, Nathanial Nortey said he initially had a confrontation with the police man after he (Nortey) had parked his vehicle before entering the banking hall.

?The policeman approached me in a shop close to the bank and asked me to move my car from the bank?s parking space because I was not a customer of the bank.?

He said later when he entered the bank, one of the private security men employed by the bank signaled the police man to question me if I was a customer.

He said the police officer, who was angry because of his initial confrontation, forced him out of the banking hall but he resisted since he was also a customer who was there to make some payments.

?In the process, the police officer slapped me and so I also returned the slap.

?Then he pulled out his gun and started firing it in the banking hall. I wasn?t the only person he was firing at; he was actually trying to fire at my leg, but fortunately for me, he couldn?t get my leg. So it was a bullet that strayed, the shell got into my leg,?? he narrated.

The three persons who were also waiting for their turn to be served were hit by the bullets.

DSP Freeman Tetteh, the Accra Regional Public Relations Officer, told DAILY GUIDE that the police Corporal earlier confronted Nathanial Nortey  because he had parked his vehicle at an unauthorized place.

After that confrontation, Nathanial entered the banking hall and spent over three hours doing nothing, according to the Police PRO.

He said one of the private security officers who suspected his actions hinted the armed police officer.

When the policeman confronted Nathanial he got furious and slapped him (police officer) in the process.

Not satisfied, Nathanial attempted to snatch the gun of the police officer when the gun accidentally went off.

Three persons who were at the banking hall transacting business were hit by the bullets thus, receiving minor injuries.

The three were sent to the nearby hospital and have since been treated and discharged. Nathaniel has denied that he attempted snatching the weapon from the police officer.

The police have requested for the CCTV camera of the bank with a view to studying what really happened.

Mr. Nortey, who was earlier arrested, has since been granted police enquiry bail after giving his statement.

In a related development, management of CAL Bank has issued a statement pertaining to the shooting incident and assured customers about their safety.

The statement reads, ?The attention of management has been drawn to a shooting incident involving a police officer on guard duty and a customer at the Derby Avenue branch of the bank on Saturday, March 08, 2014, during which three individuals were injured.

?The injured were immediately given hospital medical care and discharged.

?The incident has since been reported to the Accra Central Police Command for investigation.

?Management of the Bank assures all who may have been affected by this unfortunate incident and the general public as a whole that the bank is cooperating with the police in their investigation.
