The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has assured over 2,000 public sector workers whose salaries were suspended that payments will resume after completing verification with the Ghana Audit Service. The decision followed recommendations from the Auditor-General after a nationwide headcount exercise conducted in 2025.
Controller and Accountant-General Kwasi Agyei explained that the Auditor-General initially flagged approximately 6,000 officers who failed to participate in the headcount as ineligible for payment. However, internal analysis by CAGD reduced the affected number to about 2,000 workers after resolving issues related to other cases.
Speaking in an interview on Citi TV on Monday, Agyei emphasized that the salary suspensions were implemented strictly in accordance with Public Financial Management (PFM) laws to protect payroll integrity and ensure accountability in public expenditure.
The department has directed affected workers’ institutions to inform staff members to present themselves to the Ghana Audit Service for verification. CAGD officials confirmed that salary payments will be reactivated promptly once the Auditor-General completes the verification process and formally notifies the department.
The headcount exercise was conducted across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in 2025 as part of broader reforms aimed at eliminating ghost names and irregular payments from the government payroll. CAGD emphasized that the exercise is not punitive but designed to ensure only legitimately verified workers receive public funds.
Agyei assured all verified workers that their salaries, including arrears for suspended months, will be reinstated without delay following clearance. The department reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability while maintaining timely salary payments for eligible public sector employees.
