Charles Kwabena Akonnor, head coach of Kumasi Asante kotoko and George Lwandamina, head coach for Zambian side Zesco United, are taking a dig at each other, as they both build up euphoria for their Confederation of African Football (CAF) Confederations Cup clash on Wednesday, February 13, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

Lwandamina, noted that the porcupine warriors have outlived their glorious days, which makes Zesco United not afraid of playing them in their own backyard, stating that “Asante Kotoko have outlived their glory days and are not fearless anymore, having lost their bite and only enjoying from past glories”.

But in a sharp rebuttal, coach Akonnor claims Lwandamina could brag all he wants but that the pitch would decide, who would laugh best.

According to Akonnor, Lwandamina believes in his team, having beaten South African giants Kaizer Chiefs 3-1 in Zambia and 2-1 away, to make it to this stage of the competition.

“I don’t really mind about his talks, he knows his team, he’s done well, he went to South Africa and won, so it might be his reason for that necessary confidence.

“But, he would know whether we are not as strong as we used to be when we meet, Asante Kotoko was very strong years back, but we have not played at this level in Africa for 11 years and that could also be the reason he said that, but every good thing has a beginning and we began well and I believe it would continue,” he said.

Kotoko take on Zesco United on Wednesday February 13 at the Baba Yara sports stadium on 16hours in their second Group C game after losing to Sudanese side Al Hilal by 1:0 in their opening game in Sudan as Zesco United also beat their Zambian counter parts Nkana FC by 2:0.
