The Union for National Party (UPRONA), Burundi’s former ruling party (1966-1992), has named Gerard Nduwayo as its candidate for the June 26 presidential elections.
The announcement of Nduwayo’s candidature was made by the party’s Secretary General Gaston Sindimwo during the extraordinary national congress held in Bujumbura on Saturday.
Sindimwo said his party’s candidate for the 2015 elections had called for the consolidation of progress made under the Arusha Peace and Reconciliation Agreement for Burundi, signed on Aug. 28, 2000 as well as the restoration of state authority.
Before being named as UPRONA’s presidential candidate, Nduwayo was working as an international expert in mediation and conflict management. He had just began working as a member of the UN mediation team in Central African Republic.
In July 2014, Nduwayo was named through a presidential decree as an extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador. Enditem
