Burundian former army chief of staff Colonel Jean Bikomagu was Saturday afternoon shot dead near his home in Kabondo, in the capital Bujumbura by unidentified gunmen, witnesses have said.

“Retired Colonel Jean Bikomagu was killed at about 12:20 near the gate of his house in Kabondo as he was about to enter the compound of his house from a church service,” the victim’s neighbor, Concilie Nibigira, also chairlady of the Union for the National Progress (UPRONA) party told Xinhua after the crime.

Bikomagu’s daughter was seriously injured in the incident.

Bikomagu served as the army chief of staff between 1993 and 2006 when the Hutu rebel movements fought against the then army dominated Tutsi.

Bikomagu’s assassination follows the killing of Burundi’s former Intelligence Chief Hutu Lieutenant General Adolphe Nshimirimana on August 2 in Bujumbura and the assassination attempt in the capital, of rights activist Hutu Pierre Claver Mbonimpa. Enditem
