A suspected Burundian poacher who “clearly” cooperated with Tanzanian poachers have been arrested in Makamba Province in Southern Burundi, Burundian police said Tuesday.

A police search was operated on Monday at about 4 p.m. at the house of the suspect Tharcisse Bavugimana at Kayogoro District in Makamba province, which is close to the border with Tanzania, said Burundian Police Spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye.

Police seized a gun of the Kalashnikov type, 2,256 ammunitions and 14 elephant ivories, said Nkurikiye. The suspect “clearly cooperating” with Tanzanian poachers was arrested for further investigations, he said.

The Burundian national “must be crossing to Tanzania” to kill elephants along with some Tanzanian citizens, as Burundi does not have elephants on its territory, said the spokesperson. Enditem
