A Burundian lawmaker of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), an organ of the East African Community (EAC) Tuesday night escaped death after being shot by suspects in northern Bujumbura, a Burundian police spokesman said Wednesday.

The suspects’ jeep was ordered to stop at a police roadblock at Muha Bridge, but refused to stop and policemen suspected it, said Police Spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye, adding that the lawmaker, Pierre Claver Rurakamvye, then eagerly accepted to take some policemen aboard his vehicle and pursued the suspects.

He said the both cars drove through several neighborhoods of Bujumbura before stopping at a hotel in Kigobe where one of the suspects who had a pistol shot Rurakamvye on his arm.

All the five criminals then entered the hotel, but were all arrested inside the hotel and several items including fake stamps and documents were seized from them after a police search, according to Nkurikiye.

The jeep of the criminals used the plate number of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the five all had the Congolese citizenship, said the spokesperson. Enditem
