“Since early today (Friday), assailants attacked some military barracks in Ngagara and Musaga in the capital Bujumbura and the 120th brigade at Mujejuru in Mugongo-Manga district in Bujumbura Rural province.

BurundiOur forces foiled the attacks, killing 12 assailants and capturing 21 others,” said Burundian Army Spokesman Colonel Gaspard Baratuza.

He indicated that the military barracks that were the target of assailants in Musaga include the Logistics brigade and the Military Academy (ISCAM).

According to him, one of the captured assailants was seriously injured and taken to Kamenge Military Hospital in Bujumbura.

“On the army side, five soldiers were injured, some of them seriously, but I hope that they will recover soon,” said Col Baratuza.

He said, “The assailants’ intention was to collect military equipment like arms and ammunitions as well as other equipment from the barracks in order to launch attacks against prisons and free inmates held there.”

He added that several guns and ammunitions were seized from the assailants.

Col Baratuza said that some of the assailants were identified as young people living in various neighborhoods in the Burundian capital Bujumbura.

“The situation is now under control,” said Baratuza.

Burundi is facing a political turmoil since April when President Pierre Nkurunziza announced his bid for a third term in violation with the constitution, according to the opposition and the civil society.

This crisis led to the killing of more than 300 persons and forced some 200,000 persons into exile in neighboring countries. Enditem
