Brazilian police were seeking to arrest Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari in the wake of his unprovoked physical attack on a Ghana FA member at the World Cup in Brasilia last week, it has been revealed.

The AC Milan midfielder physically attacked Moses Armah without any provocation during a meeting with the players over their appearance fees at the World Cup.

He is also accused of following Mr Armah to his hotel room, threatening further violence, destroying his property and other personal belongings.

Nyantakyi said the move by the GFA to penalize the AC Milan star was timely, as it instilled discipline in the entire playing body and also saved Sulley from facing criminal charges in Brazil.

?There was a request by the hotel authorities to hand Sulley over to the police because it is a crime to attack someone in Brazil,? Ghana FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi said in an interview with Neat FM.

?He could have gone to jail and as a mitigation measure we had to stamp our authority by taking steps to ensure discipline in the team.

?If we had not done that we would have lost credibility because the Brazilian authorities were watching to see what we would do.?

Muntari was sacked from camp hours before Ghana?s final Group G match against Portugal in Brasilia for violent behaviour following the attack.

He has been handed an indefinite suspension by the Ghana FA and that has put his international career in serious doubt.
