Rooney headed in Leighton Baines’ cross before half-time, but missed chances and a string of Wojciech Szczesny saves increased the tension inside Wembley, reports the BBC.

Andros Townsend hit the bar before the break, and in the second half Szczesny denied Rooney and Daniel Sturridge.

But captain Gerrard flicked over the Poland goalkeeper two minutes from confirm England’s place in Brazil.

Also through from Europe as automatic qualifiers are Bosnia-Herzegovina, which is there first ever qualification for a major football tournament, Russia and champions, Spain
