Residents of Kakurum in Kano plead that the authorities relocate the shooters

Four-year-old Musa Sani was, on Sunday, hit in the thigh by a stray bullet from a shooting range in Kakurum Village, Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State.

A neighbour, Buhu Kakurum, who took the boy to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital for medical attention, said the boy was hit while he was playing near his father’s house.

He said people of that village have been suffering as a result of stray bullets from soldiers and police for the past 30 years.

“There is a shooting range in our area and it has been there for more than 30 years,” he said. “Initially, the shooting range was used by the military, but because of the danger it was posing to our lives, we reported the case to the emir and the soldiers were asked to leave the place. Unfortunately, when the soldiers left, the police cleared the area, and started using it for shooting exercise.”

Haruna, who is secretary to the Kakurum Development Association, said because of the shooting exercise, many people in the area live in fear. He called on the governor to intervene in the matter.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Rilwanu Dutse, said the police was yet to receive any report on the incident.
