Botswana’s three parties coalition Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) are in talks to form a single opposition party, local media reported on Tuesday. Botswana
UDC, formed of Botswana National Front (BNF), Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) and Botswana People’s Party (BPP) has became the main opposition in the parliament with 17 seats after last year’s general elections.
Formed in 2012, UDC posted the best performance by an opposition in the history of Botswana, beating the previous highest number of 13 by the BNF in 1999.
The general membership of the three parties will decide whether to merge into a single party, BMD vice president Wynter Mmolotsi was quoted as saying by local newspaper Mmegi.
Mmolotsi also said the three parties now consider them like a family and have recently taken a resolution to intensify recruitment of new members. To ensure their penetrates in the north, the parties have formed a taskforce including eight teams in total compromising of parliamentarians, councillors and branch members, said the party leader.
“The UDC will also revive all its party structures,” he added. Enditem
