Two Israeli soldiers were injured when an explosive device was detonated near them as they performed “routine activity” on the Israeli side of the border with Lebanon, a spokeswoman for the Israeli military said.

bomb-blastA Lebanese security source told dpa that a roadside bomb exploded as an Israeli tank was passing near al-Sendaneh in the area of Shebaa.

In retaliation, Israeli artillery shelled the hills of al-Sendaneh, they said. Two shells fell inside Lebanese territory of Kafr Shouba but no casualties were immediately reported.

On Sunday, Israeli troops shot and wounded in the hand a Lebanese soldier near the border.

The soldier was hit when a Lebanese army patrol came under fire in Jabal al-Sendaneh, west of the disputed Shebaa Farms area.

The Israeli military said its soldiers identified and opened fire at suspects trying to “infiltrate into Israeli territory.” The Lebanese returned fire.

The Shebaa Farms area is located at the junction of Lebanon, Syria and Israel and has been occupied by Israel since the 1967 Middle East war.

The Israel-Lebanon border has been largely quiet since the 2006 second Lebanon war.

An Israeli-built security fence runs slightly south of the UN-drawn blue line marking the Israel-Lebanon border and has in the past caused confusion as to who is trespassed on whose territory.
