US President, Barak Obama has written President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of their meeting scheduled to hold later in the year.
The letter was handed to President Jonathan on Wednesday by the US Under Secretary on Political Affairs, Wendy Sherman during an audience with the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Speaking to journalists at the Presidential Villa after handing the letter to President Jonathan, said Sherman said the letter partly contained issues concerning the Bi-National Commission which is really an invaluable tool for the two countries to work together for a strong
relationship between them and to support Nigeria as it moves forward to meet all the challenges before it.
According to her, the issues before the bi-national commission also ranges from security to governance, education, and agriculture.
“The bi-national commission is really an invaluable tool for the two countries to work together for a strong relationship between them and to support Nigeria as it moves forward to meet all the challenges before it,” she said.
Speaking further, she acknowledged that Nigeria was a nation that is very important not only on the continent but around the world.
“I have given him a letter from President Barak Obama and he was gracious enough to accept it and we look forward to working further on the basis of the letter. Our presidents will likely meet soon. I will leave that announcement to the President of the United States and the President of Nigeria. But Nigeria is a very important country, not only here on the continent but around the world,” she said.
Also in re-affirming US’s recognition of Nigeria, she recalled that the country has served on the Security Council of the United Nation and it is likely to do so again in future.
She acknowledged that Nigeria was the head of the committee on democracy and has been leader in so many ways, like in the Economic Communities of West African States as a peace-keeper all around the world which are the partnerships that are important to the US.
She noted that earlier, Secretary of States, John Kerry had a meeting with President Jonathan in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia at the African Union summit which is important the US with the US still looking for every opportunity to strengthen both countries relationship.
