Belgian authorities have detained four people in raids targeting foreign fighters, prosecutors announced Friday, while stressing that there is no link to this month’s attacks in Paris or a foiled Belgian terrorist plot.belgium_flag_map

Belgium is reported to have Europe’s highest share, per capita, of foreign fighters – locals who join jihadist groups in Syria and Iraq and are seen as a security threat once they return.

Police carried out a total of 22 raids in seven communities on Friday, as part of a crackdown on an organization recruiting people to travel to Syria, the federal prosecution agency said in a statement.

“Several people wanted to go there to fight, probably at the heart of a terrorist organization,” the statement said.

No arms, explosives or ammunitions were found during the searches. A magistrate must now decide whether to keep the four detainees in custody.
