Ghana’s Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has imposed stricter curfew hours on Bawku Municipality effective July 31, 2025.

According to an executive instrument issued July 30, the curfew now runs from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am daily, replacing previous restrictions. The decision follows advice from the National Security Council amid escalating violence in the Upper East Region.

A concurrent total ban prohibits all persons in Bawku and surrounding areas from carrying arms, ammunition, or offensive weapons. Violators face immediate arrest and prosecution. The Interior Ministry’s statement urged community leaders and youth to “exercise restraint” and pursue non-violent peacebuilding measures.

This security reinforcement includes deploying 400 Ghana Armed Forces personnel to restore order. Chief of Army Staff Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu confirmed the troop mobilization during a June 27 working visit, aligning with government efforts to stabilize the conflict-ridden zone.
