The African Union (AU) on Friday urged its member states to speed up implementation and action on agriculture initiatives and projects designed and adopted at the continental level to address challenges in the agriculture sector, thereby curbing food insecurity and malnutrition in Africa.

The AU Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture, Josefa Leonel Correia Sacko, made the remarks at the two-day Ministerial session of the 3rd Specialized Technical Committee on Agriculture, Water, and Environment, which closed on Friday at the AU Headquarters in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa.

Stating that various initiatives and decisions have already been adopted by AU heads of states to boost agriculture productivity, the commissioner urged action at national levels on the initiatives and the projects.

The AU commissioner also emphasized the need to boost productivity through modernization of Africa’s agriculture.

Speaking on her part, Frenesh Mekuria, Ethiopia’s Deputy Commissioner of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, reiterated the Malabo declaration of AU for agriculture development, which primarily focuses on eradicating hunger and poverty reduction. Enditem
