“We remain concerned about the ongoing challenges faced by the peoples of Burundi, Libya, Mali and South Sudan, and the African Union remains committed to work with our Member states to ensure that lasting peace is restored,” she said in her New Year message.

In the just concluded year, Dlamini-Zuma said the AU Commission of Inquiry on South Sudan, the first of its kind on the continent, finalized its assignment and came up with recommendations on peacemaking, transitional justice, and sustainable development for South Sudan.

Viewing year 2016 as a watershed on the continental human rights trajectory, AU will focus on three thematic areas to promote human rights in general and women rights in particular, she said.

The areas include knowledge production and management on human rights in general and women rights in particular; advocacy and outreach on promotion and protection of human rights in Africa; and multi-sectoral dialogues on human rights and the rights of women in particular. Enditem
