The half-day meeting aimed to initiate an action-oriented continental partnership with potential partners on promoting improved water supply and sanitation on the African continent.

In her opening remarks, Tumusiime Rhoda Peace, AU Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture, underlined the need to strengthen partnership and working in collaboration with potential partners in promoting different programmes designed to increase water access and improve the level of sanitation in Africa.

Africa is lagging behind as far as sanitation is concerned, and also the access to drinking water is a challenge on the continent, said the commissioner.

“Africa is lagging behind as far as sanitation is concerned, also water access has been very discouraging because we haven’t met the millennium development goal (MDG), and with the coming sustainable development goals (SDGs), then it means we are really quite far,” she said.

The commissioner said different promgrammes and initiatives have been put together towards raising the coverage of water supply and improving the level of sanitation in Africa.

The level of sanitation in Africa is in a “dire” condition, said the commissioner and called for collaboration with partners to change the situation. Enditem
