Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar

Former Military Head of State, Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar on Friday appealed to the striking lecturers under the auspices of Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) to call off their strike in the collective interest of the country.

Abdulsalami made the remark during a Sallah homage, he and the former military President, General Ibrahim Babangida paid to Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger at his residence in Minna, stressing that the striking lecturers have made their point.

According to him: “I appeal to everybody to give peace a chance, for the strikers to stealth their swords and the government to as fast as possible resolve the issues at stake.

“I believe strike is normal over all the world but in Nigeria, we are over doing it, strike in advance countries are done for hours or days to draw attention to their plights.

“In turn the government must look into the issues to see that the demands that are legitimate are met, regardless of the dwindling resources.

“The people on strike should look at the coffers of the government and try to be reasonable to make their demands, as both the strikers and the citizen are feeling the pitch.

“The strikers should review their stand as they had made their points and I believe the government is listening,” he said.

On the issue of insecurity, Abdulsalami enjoined every Nigerian to play their role as citizens in providing information on the activities of the criminal elements, while the government in turn protects its sources of information.

“Without peace you cannot have a nation, without peace you cannot start looking for daily bread and without peace you cannot go on strike, it is absolutely necessary, we join hands to ensure we have a peaceful nation,” he said.

He condemned those involved in oil theft and urged them search their conscience over their action.

“I will say they are not doing the right thing as such we must come together to ensure that we have a peaceful country.?

Responding, Governor Babangida Aliyu commended the two former leaders for the visit, stressing that his administration had benefitted immensely from their wealth of experience.

?You have tempered our radicalism with the realities on ground.?
