The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) in the Greater Accra Region has celebrated its 10 years anniversary with a call on government to deploy more security personnel into the area.

The Ashaiman Municipality was carved out of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) in 2008 following series of demonstrations and protests by residents against been part of the Adenta Municipality which had just been ceded off TMA.

The anniversary on under the theme: “The new Ashaiman, 10 years of transformation”.

Mr Albert Boakye Okyere, Ashaiman Municipal Chief Executive delivering the anniversary speech at a durbar at Mandela Park in Ashaiman stated that security must be intensified in the area especially towards the 2020 general election to protect lives and properties from unscrupulous persons who may want to foment trouble.

Mr Okyere indicated that the area’s population was over 300,000 with a growth rate of about 4.6 per cent, higher than that of the country’s 2.6 per cent.

He recounted the various developmental projects the area had seen after becoming a Municipality.

This, he said included an ultra modern polyclinic, municipal library and modern markets.

Mr Okyere announced that ASHMA was working towards making Ashaiman a 24-hour city by the year 2025.

Mr Alfred Kwame Agbesi, former Deputy Minority leader and ex Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, said the carving out of ASHMA from TMA was “a tough battle worth fighting”.

Mr Agbesi, who chaired the anniversary durbar, noted that after series of petitions and consultations, Ashaiman was finally given a municipality status under former President John Agyekum Kuffour in 2008.

He charged the current administration of the Assembly, to urgently fast-track the construction of the new municipal administration block before the Assembly’s 11th anniversary celebration.

Mr Ernest Norgbey, MP for the area, said he would collaborate with the Assembly to invest into the education sector of Ashaiman as it held the key to economic development.

The anniversary durbar was attended by residents and dignitaries including Mr Kwadwo Akuamoah Boateng, Ashaiman Municipal Coordinating Director, past Municipal Chief Executives and former Members of Parliament for the area.

Others were MCEs from sister Districts and Municipal heads of departments and Assembly Members.
