WASHINGTON — The United States and Japan on Friday announced that they would work together to eliminate highly enriched uranium (HEU) from a Japanese research reactor to reduce the risk of theft and use by nuclear terrorists.

The two countries said in a joint statement at the 2016 Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, D.C., that all HEU fuel at the Kyoto University Critical Assembly will be transferred to the U.S., where it will be downblended to low enriched uranium (LEU). (U.S.-Japan-Nuke Materials Removal)

MOSCOW — Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday in a phone call with the U.S. State Secretary John Kerry urged to close the Syrian-Turkish border to curb the flow of terrorists.

“Lavrov reiterated that the Turkey-Syria border remains ‘full of holes’ and is actively used for infiltration of terrorist militants into Syria via Turkey,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. (Russia-Syria-U.S.)

VIENNA — Austria on Friday suggested setting up a new force to secure the European Union (EU) external border to deal with any influx of migrants.

After meeting with defense chiefs from central and eastern European countries, Austrian Defense Ministers Hans Peter Doskozil said Austria and its neighbors in central Europe will send the proposal to EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini. (Austria-EU-Refugees) Enditem
