The All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) on Wednesday in Abuja called on the Federal Government to pay more attention to education sector in the interest of the nation.
This is contained in a statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Emma Eneukwu.

ANPP received with interest the news that the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has commenced a 7- day warning strike owing to non implementation of 2009 agreements between them and government. The strike is also due to the non-inclusion of funds for the payment of the Earned Allowances in the 2013 budget and the findings of the report of a committee in the universities,? it stated.

It urged the Federal Government to urgently pay priority attention to the nation?s education sector before it dwindled due to lack of adequate infrastructure and qualified manpower. ?Recently, the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigeria [CVC] reported that Nigerians spend an average of 500 million dollars annually on European and American universities, yet ours are inadequately funded.

? We are worried that government fails to understand that people are losing faith in Nigerian universities, the breeding ground of the country?s future leaders,? it said and advised the government to be wary of the implication of the falling standard of education on the image of the country in the comity of nations.

The opposition party called on the government to return to the negotiation table with the university staff and fulfil the promises made to them in 2009.
It charged the government to evolve more creative engagement strategies with the university personnel to forestall future strikes for the benefit of the youth and the good of the nation.

?As a party, we believe that a government can only earn the confidence of the people it governs when it is seen to have its priorities right and is sincere in prudent administration of the people?s scarce resources,? the party said.
