Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos was “profoundly shocked” and expressed regret over the deaths of nine police officers killed in an operation in the central Huambo Province to arrest leaders of a religious sect, the official news agency reported on Monday. Jose Eduardo dos Santos
Followers of The Seventh Day Light of the World, a sect believed to be part of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, opened fired last Thursday on policemen who were trying to capture its leader Jose Julino Kalupeteka following an arrest warrant.
The nine police officers include the Caola municipality commander Evaristo Catumbela, and the provincial head of operations of the Rapid Intervention Police Luhengue Joaquim Jose – one of the heaviest police losses in Namibia in recent years.
Secretary of State for Civil Protection and Fire Service Eug? nio Laborinho said the sect leader had been detained by police.
The president had expressed his solidarity to the relatives of the victims, he said during his visit to Humabo.
The Interior Ministry has condemned the attack and vowed that those responsible for this “hideous crime” will be brought to justice. Enditem
