Angola’s Higher Education Teachers’ Union (SINPES), which planned to go on strike from Friday over arrears, has suspended the action after an agreement with the higher education and finance ministries, the union said.

The agreement, reached with the Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry and the Finance Ministry, provides for the payment in stages of about 2.3 billion kwanzas (4.7 million U.S. dollars) in debt to teachers and staff accumulated from 2012 to date.

The payment will start in March, SINPES general secretary Eduardo Alberto said.

“We are going to postpone our strike, but we expect the payment of the debt to be accomplished until July, taking into account the number of beneficiaries, which reaches around 3,500 employees,” Alberto said. Enditem
