Angola’s debut as host country of ITB Berlin 2026 marked a strategic turning point for African tourism, delivering a message to the global travel industry that the continent is no longer a secondary consideration in international destination planning.

Angola was only the third African nation to hold the host country title in the event’s six-decade history, appearing under the slogan “Visit Angola, The Rhythm of Life.” The country arrived in Berlin with momentum: officials announced a 30 percent increase in international arrivals during 2025, placing Angola fourth globally among the fastest-growing tourism destinations and generating $667 million in sector revenue.

Angola’s Tourism Minister Marcio de Jesus Lopes Daniel described the country’s strategic ambition plainly, telling Euronews that tourism is now the nation’s “green oil” a sustainable economic engine intended to reduce dependence on petroleum revenues.

Angola’s government is preparing to host the Global Tourism Forum Investment Summit in Luanda from 7 to 9 May, where hotel groups, infrastructure developers and financial institutions are expected to explore new tourism investment opportunities.

Overall, the 60th anniversary edition of ITB Berlin generated around 47 billion euros in business deals, with nearly 97,000 visitors attending across the three days despite flight disruptions linked to tensions in the Middle East. The Maldives was confirmed as host country for ITB Berlin 2027.

For Africa, Angola’s performance in Berlin demonstrated that the continent’s tourism ambitions are backed by measurable growth and concrete investment pipelines, not just promotional imagery.
