UMB Chief Executive Officer, Mr. John Awuah has described the Accra Open Golf Tournament as Ghana’s premier golf event that teaches one to be focused, strategic and dedicated. Thus, its skills are important for one to succeed in business.

Mr. John Awuah indicated that, the Accra Open is a flagship golf event, organised annually by the Achimota Golf Club and as part of the 45th anniversary of UMB, the bank decided to partner with the Club to promote the sports, provide the opportunity for members to network, to make meaningful connections with customers of the bank and to cement the relationships with key business partners.

According to him, the tournament has been a success, and plans are already underway to make next year’s event even more memorable.

“I have been excited at the turn of events. From Thursday to Sunday, we have had a fantastic time. We have seen some very good golfing and people actually had to play in the rain.

“For the last 45 years, UMB has been helping businesses and this was an opportunity to partner Achimota Golf Club to have the Accra Open 2017” he indicated.

Mr. Awuah said, deals are sealed on the golf course and agreements are signed in the office. However, the Bank made an extra donation of Gh¢10,000 for all the winners in the Accra Open Golf Tournament which took place from 7-10th December 2017, at the Achimota Golf Club.

Relatively, Alliance Motors Ghana, the official distributor of Jaguar and Land Rover in Ghana also in partnership with the Achimota Golf Club, launched the Range Rover Velar during the UMB Accra Open Golf Tournament.

The Rangr Rover Velar was to be officially unveiled on the final day of the tournament as the Grand Prize for the Land Rover Hole in One award, to the player who achieves the winning shot.

According to Kwadwo Adjabeng, the sales Manager of Alliance Motors Ghana, “the Accra Open is one of the premier golfing events in West Africa, making it a perfect platform to launch the Range Rover Velar in Ghana. The Velar offers levels of luxury, refinement and all-terrain capability that Accra Open participants will be thrilled to experience. Having the Velar as the Grand Prize in the Hole in One competition will bring another level of excitement to the event.”

Unfortunately at end of the day, no player was able to grab the Velar as the Grand Prize in the Hole in One competition.

Mr. Vincent Torgah from the Tema Golf Club made a four-day beautiful performance to win the top prize at the 2017 UMB Accra Open Championship in the 18-hole tournament featured seasoned golfers across the country and the West African sub region.

He grossed 280 to beat Emos Korblah and Olapade who were first and second runners up, respectively.

In the senior ladies category, Peace Akewi came first with a net score of 85, Helen Appah placed second with 87 net, whereas, in the ladies scratch, Felicity Okyei Gyeabour, Jessica Tei and L. Amponsah Mensah grossed 166, 170 and 174; placing first, second and third, respectively.

Whilst in the men’s scratch category, Kofi Yeboah of the Tafo Golf Club, Frank Avorsey representing Achimota Golf Club and Alfred Kwame also from Tafo Golf Club placed first, second and third with a gross score of 147, 151 and 154, respectively.

Avorsey and Max Prah were winners in the Longest Drive category for males, whiles Rubabat Oseni and L. Amponsah Mensah emerged as winners for the Longest Drive category for females.

However, Vincent Torgah in an interview with said, one of the things that makes a professional win a tournament is the mental aspect of golfing.

Indicating that, his being busy touring Africa and returning to win in Ghana has been a meaningful accomplishment. And was quick to add that, “I would soon compete on another bigger stage, playing among the best 32 countries in the world.”

He therefore, urged government to use sports, especially golf, to draw the youth off the streets and develop their interest in sports in order to make them better future leaders.
