Amazon announced on Monday it will invest an additional €18 billion in Spain, raising its total committed spending in the country to €33.7 billion and cementing its ambition to make Spain the centre of its artificial intelligence operations across Europe.

The announcement was made at Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, where Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez met Amazon’s chief global affairs and legal officer David Zapolsky. The new commitment adds to the €15.7 billion Amazon Web Services (AWS) pledged in 2024 for data centre development in the northeastern Aragon region.

The total investment is estimated to contribute €31.7 billion to Spain’s gross domestic product through 2035, supporting an estimated 29,900 full-time equivalent jobs annually across local businesses. Of these, 6,700 represent direct jobs from Amazon’s investment, covering data centre operations staff, construction workers, and security personnel.

More than half of the investment impact is concentrated directly in Aragon, where €18.5 billion is projected to contribute to the regional economy through 2035, supporting an estimated 13,400 full-time equivalent jobs annually in local businesses.

Beyond data centre construction, Amazon also plans to build supply chain facilities in Aragon, including a server manufacturing plant, a manufacturing fulfilment warehouse, and a dedicated artificial intelligence and machine learning server manufacturing and repair facility. When fully operational, the facilities are expected to create approximately 1,800 additional jobs in the region.

Aragon is sparsely populated and benefits from strong sunshine and wind, making it a popular site for solar parks and wind farms. Local leaders hope the region’s growing renewable energy base can help position it as a hub for the data centres needed to power generative artificial intelligence.

Zapolsky said the expanded investment marks a long-term bet on Spain. Since arriving in Spain in 2011, Amazon has invested more than €20 billion in the country across retail operations, logistics, cloud and AI infrastructure, community development programmes, and innovation for customers and businesses.

The announcement comes as European countries debate the need for technological sovereignty, with some governments warning against dependence on American companies for cloud storage and data processing. Amazon’s latest commitment is the largest technology investment it has made in Spain and signals the continued race among hyperscale technology firms to build artificial intelligence infrastructure across the continent.
